I ripped off my headphones and headed toward the door.

“Wait a second,” Beard said.

“I’m not letting this happen again. I’ll kill him first!”

“You go in there and Black and everybody else in the city’s gonna know what we’re doing.”

“I don’t give a damn!”

“Just wait a few more seconds. Sheryl’s no kid. She might have a plan.”

I thought about it. “You got ten,” I said, then put my headphones back on and we both continued to listen.

SHERYL: So… What did you want to talk about?

CHUCK: You like snakes?

SHERYL: Shit, no. Who in the hell likes snakes?

CHUCK: Well, pretty lady, I’m afraid you’re gonna have to learn to like ’em if you want to get your hubby out of the can.

(Sound of a zipper.)

SHERYL: What are you doing?

CHUCK: I’m introducing you to my pet snake… Now get on your knees.

I had my hands on the headphones, ready to toss them off and sprint across the street.

(Sheryl starts laughing)

I looked at Beard. Maybe she did have a plan.

CHUCK: What’s so damn funny?

SHERYL: Nothing… I just… When you said snake, I pictured something… bigger. And longer.

CHUCK: You a smart-ass bitch, ain’t ye? Start suckin’ or start walkin’.

(Sheryl is heard kneeling, then a pause, then CHUCK screams)

SHERYL: I done told you I’ll do anything to get my husband out of prison. That includes yanking your skinny little worm right offa your fat, greasy body.

(Chuck stops screaming, starts crying)

CHUCK: Please, let it go… It hurts…

SHERYL: Who do I need to talk to for help? I know you ain’t runnin’ nothin’.

CHUCK: Biney… Biney Beals… I’ll set it up, I promise… Please…

SHERYL: Soon.

CHUCK: Okay, okay, okay…

SHERYL: Promise me, Chuck.

(Sheryl yanks, Chuck screams)

CHUCK: I promise, damn it!… I swear on my momma!…Please…

SHERYL: You’ve got my number… if you mention this to Mr. Beals, I’ll make sure to tell ’em you almost let thirty grand walk out the door ’cause I wouldn’t get your rocks off. Don’t forget y’all came to me, not the other way around.

CHUCK: I swear to Jesus I won’t say nothin’! Just let it go…

(Sheryl releases Chuck’s member and stands.)

SHERYL: Good luck, Chuck. I’ll be waitin’ on the phone to ring.

(Chuck sobs. She walks out of the office and the front doorbell rings.)

Agent Beard and I sat in the motel room, stunned.

“I guess she had a plan after all,” Beard said.

“To what?” I said. “Pull a Stretch Armstrong on his johnson?”

Agent Beard and I were both thinking of an answer to that question when the motel door opened, and Sheryl Lee walked in. Without a word, she casually strolled to the bathroom sink and washed her hands, before appearing in front of us with a smile on her face.

“Well?” she said. “Can I have a beer now?”
